Personal Development Learning Curriculum Statement
SCARF stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship
SCARF is a curriculum for PSHE including Relationships and Sex Education which is produced by Coram – a well-respected charity working to improve the lives and life-chances of the UK’s children and young people. Coram's mission is to develop, deliver and promote best practice in the support of vulnerable children and young people.
We have chosen SCARF because the lessons build upon children’s prior learning; we have assessed the content and feel that it is relevant and sensitive to the needs of the children. There is planned progression across the SCARF scheme of work, so that children are increasingly and appropriately challenged as they move up through the school.
SCARF covers all of the DfE's statutory requirements for Relationships Education and Health Education, including non-statutory Sex Education.
For each year group, there are six suggested themed units which provide a complete PSHE and wellbeing curriculum.
We also use No Outsiders, a scheme of work that uses age-appropriate story books to teach children about seven of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and that difference is a positive, not a negative.
No Outsiders has three core values:
- respect for diversity through education in schools;
- commitment to community cohesion through understanding and acceptance of difference;
- promotion of dialogue to counter fear and hate in society.
We have chosen No Outsiders to supplement Relationship Education to help prepare our children for life in modern Britain. It is a fact that prejudice and discrimination exist, and children are going to experience it at some point. We need to prepare them, give them confidence to disagree when they hear prejudice, and show them that they are not alone.
No Outsiders reflects our Core Value of Respect; supports Diversity, Equality and Inclusion; and underpins the teaching of the British Values.
More information for parents can be found on the No Outsiders website.
We use Picture News assemblies to allow opportunities for children to learn about our world. Teaching the news not only provides great content and stimulus and grips children’s attention, it is also something that the children can impact. It is current, happening now and so their voice is given meaning and purpose.
